Statement written by Christine Cooke in support of SB 195 (Credit Acceptance by Higher Education Institutions) and submitted to the Senate Education Committee of the Utah Legislature.
Sutherland Institute believes that education should be fitted to the individual student, which is why we support the philosophy of competency-based education—mastery of content at the time, pace and place of the individual. This bill facilitates that philosophy through the collaboration between regionally accredited, competency-based education providers and institutions of higher education so that students can earn credit when they transfer to another school.
The competency-based philosophy in education will require a culture change, and SB 195 is an important policy for moving in that direction.
We encourage you to support SB 195.
