SALT LAKE CITY—Today Sutherland Institute Vice President of Policy Derek Monson announced Jon Ammons will join Sutherland’s new stable of contributing scholars, with a focus on civic institutions.
“Jon’s writing as a contributing scholar will bring to regular readers of Sutherland’s research and analysis the unique policy insights of a wealth of experience working with local, state, national and international elected officials,” Monson said. “Those who subscribe to Sutherland’s newsletter will come to learn through Jon’s contributions how, at a time of international instability that is strengthening the hand of authoritarian regimes across the globe, the world needs strong U.S. civic institutions more than ever.”
“I am humbled by the invitation to join the Sutherland roster of contributing scholars,” Ammons said. “For more than 25 years, Sutherland Institute has championed principles and ideals that are vital to flourishing American families, communities and institutions. I look forward to contributing to their already rich intellectual legacy in the areas of American exceptionalism, religious freedom, and diplomacy.”
Ammons currently serves as the associate director of the New York Office of Public and International Affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he performs outreach at the United Nations and to the broader diplomatic and religious communities in New York. Ammons’ previous work includes government, interfaith, and community relations outreach at the church’s global headquarters in Salt Lake City. Prior to joining the Church’s New York office, Ammons served as deputy chief of staff in the Utah House of Representatives and as a senior policy and communications advisor to the Speaker of the House.
Ammons has an undergraduate degree in humanities from Brigham Young University and is currently completing a master’s degree in government at Johns Hopkins University, where his writing and academic interests have centered on American exceptionalism, religious freedom, and the role of faith in the public square. In addition to his native English, he is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese and has studied French, Italian and Chinese. Ammons and his wife, Brianne, live in New Jersey and are the happy parents of four wonderful children.
Ammons’ research and writing will be published by Sutherland beginning in September 2021.
