SALT LAKE CITY—Sutherland Institute announced today that Doris Kearns Goodwin – the world-renowned presidential historian, public speaker, and Pulitzer Prize-winning New York TimesNo. 1 best-selling author – will keynote Sutherland’s 25th anniversary gala on Nov. 9, 2019.
Goodwin’s Team of Rivals served as inspiration for Steven Spielberg’s hit film Lincoln. Her seventh and most recent book, Leadership: In Turbulent Times, was published in 2018. A culmination of Goodwin’s career studying American presidents, the book provides a roadmap for leaders in every field of endeavor.
“Scholars who have studied the development of leaders have situated resilience, the ability to sustain ambition in the face of frustration, at the heart of potential leadership growth,” Goodwin writes. “More important than what happened to them [Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson] was how they responded to these reversals, how they managed in various ways to put themselves back together, how these watershed experiences at first impeded, then deepened, and finally and decisively molded their leadership.”
Goodwin’s career was inspired when she was selected, as a Harvard student, to join the White House Fellows, a prestigious program for leadership and public service. She worked with President Johnson in the White House and later helped him write his memoirs.
Goodwin was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II.
“Doris Kearns Goodwin’s knowledge of both history and leadership are unparalleled,” said Rick B. Larsen, president and CEO of Sutherland Institute. “What a privilege it is to celebrate Sutherland’s 25th anniversary by sharing such a deep and respectful perspective. History should provide an inspiring, nonpartisan learning experience, and her writing is always astute – and, quite frankly, just what we need in these divisive times. We are honored to host and recognize her work in November.”
Sutherland Institute’s 25th Anniversary Gala will take place on the evening of Saturday, Nov. 9. It will be open to media who RSVP in advance to kelsey@sifreedom.org. Interviews with Goodwin will also be arranged on a limited and first-come, first-served basis. More information will follow regarding performing artists, honorees, and VIPs.
Ticket registration opens on August 1. Sponsorship information can be found on sutherlandinstitute.org/gala or by emailing candice@sifreedom.org.
