Sutherland Institute’s Congressional Series to return in August

June 24, 2022

SALT LAKE CITY—Today Sutherland Institute announced the return of its Congressional Series for 2022. Later this summer, each of Utah’s members of Congress will take the opportunity to speak on a critical policy issue and engage in Q&A.

Sutherland’s founder, Gaylord Swim, once said:

Those who, for whatever reason, choose not to run for public office, ought to be grateful to those who will, even if we do not always fully agree with them. After all, governing in a free society ought not to be about winning or ruling, rather it is about leading, serving, uniting and about achieving the best solutions under a framework of law. This process requires strong advocates, certainly, but it also takes a counter-balancing sense of humility, civility and dialogue.

“Sutherland is proud to continue the tradition of bringing Utah’s delegation closer to their constituents on topics that are of priority to them,” said Rick B. Larsen, Sutherland Institute president and CEO. “It seems that nearly every day, we see in this nation a new point of deeper division. The only path toward unity is discussion and dialogue. Our goal is to provide a direct channel of facilitated communication that will prompt greater civic engagement. The interaction between constituents and those they elect matters now more than ever. These events offer unique, uninterrupted presentations that educate and inform that critical relationship.”

Reforming welfare and workforce policy elevates work

The success of the Utah model doesn’t mean the state is perfect; there are certainly still opportunities to improve how we help people get out and stay out of poverty. But there is no sustained path out of poverty that doesn’t include a meaningful connection to work.
