SALT LAKE CITY — Sutherland Institute applauds Governor Gary Herbert, who today signed HB 14, State Monuments Act Amendments, into law.
“Utah has long led the way in public lands policy,” said Derek Monson, vice president of policy. “This bill reminds us that conservation and local control can coincide. Utah now has a mechanism to create monuments from state lands by requiring the Division of Parks and Recreation to regularly evaluate property for monument status. These monuments will protect historic landmarks, cultural sites and archaeological resources.
“By contrast, these decisions will be unlike national monument designations that are often unilateral decisions locking up huge chunks of our state while ignoring local needs and voices. We know Utah is pro-monument when the right restraints on power are a part of the process. Sutherland commends the Legislature for enacting this important legislation and the governor for signing it.”
