SALT LAKE CITY (February 1, 2023) – Sutherland Institute announced today the addition of former General Relief Society President Jean B. Bingham to its Board of Directors. Bingham will draw from her leadership experience in the faith, educational and philanthropic sectors to enhance Sutherland’s work on religious liberty, education, family, and the institutions of civil society.

“Jean was one of five faith leaders to pray in the Rose Garden for the 2018 National Day of Prayer,” said Rick Larsen, Sutherland Institute president and CEO. “Her words and her years of leadership offer a blueprint – extolled by Sutherland and countless scholars and social scientists – for strengthening the foundational principles and institutions upon which freedom relies. Her prayer from 2018 has only increased in prescience and wisdom: ‘Help us to find ways to understand and value one another, to work together in cooperation and selflessness. … May we examine ourselves and become better individuals, thereby increasing the peace and happiness of each citizen in this United States of America.’ It is my honor to welcome her intellect and influence to the Sutherland Board.”

From 2017 to 2022, Bingham served as the general president of the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Relief Society is a global organization of more than 7 million women that provides faith, educational and philanthropic support to women and their families. Prior to her service, she earned a master’s degree in teaching and taught English as a second language to immigrants and refugees. Bingham serves on the SHOW UP for Foster Care Community Committee, an initiative of Utah First Lady Abby Cox.

Bingham and her husband, Bruce, raised their two daughters and several “children of the heart” who became part of their family in the Chicago area. Their family now includes a delightful dozen grandchildren.
