Sutherland’s 2018 Gala: The Sun Is Still Rising
On the evening of Friday, October 12, 2018, Sutherland presented the Sutherland Institute New Birth of Freedom Award to three inspiring honorees.
The keynote speaker for the evening was Arthur Brooks, bestselling author and president of American Enterprise Institute.
Special musical guests included Loren Allred (the voice behind the hit song “Never Enough” from the motion picture The Greatest Showman), GENTRI, and the Debra Bonner Unity Gospel Choir.

NEW BIRTH OF FREEDOM AWARD WINNERS
NBA Governor; Board of Directors, Larry H. Miller Group of Companies
Greg Miller has served in various leadership positions within the Miller organization for more than thirty years, including as CEO from 2008 to 2015. In addition to his role as a member of the board of directors, he is also a trustee for the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies. His leadership style is visionary and innovative, and one of his primary goals is to enrich the lives of others. To that end, Greg and his wife Heidi established two foundations, the Do Good as You Go Foundation and the Sherry Black Education Foundation.
Greg serves on several community and professional boards, including the Utah Highway Patrol’s Honorary Colonel Association and the National Basketball Association’s Board of Governors.
When not working, Greg enjoys adventure travel and spending time with his family. Greg recently lead a 2,000-kilometer expedition across the icecap of Greenland in early 2018.
Greg is the curator of the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum in Salt Lake City, Utah, which displays over 70 models of Toyota Land Cruisers as well as Land Cruiser memorabilia.
Greg and his wife Heidi live in Salt Lake City and are the proud parents of six children and six grandchildren.

MAJOR GENERAL JEFFERSON S. BURTON
Adjutant General of the Utah National Guard
Major General Jeff Burton was appointed Adjutant General of the Utah National Guard in October 2012. MG Burton is responsible for the readiness and training of 7,300 Soldiers and Airmen. The Utah Guard provides the State of Utah with trained and disciplined forces for domestic emergencies to including: firefighting, flood, civil support and physical-security operations. The Utah Army Guard has personnel and equipment in over 20 community armories throughout Utah, where Soldiers train for combat and state-support missions. The Airmen of the Utah Air Guard, based at Salt Lake International Airport, provide air refueling, communications, intelligence, air-battle management and security support.
MG Burton has served as a company commander, battalion executive officer and assistant professor of Military Science at both Brigham Young and Utah Valley Universities. He commanded the 1457th Engineer Combat Battalion from 2002 to 2005, during which time his unit served in Iraq and participated in the initial ground war, conducting IED-defeat and route-clearance missions. After deployment he was assigned as deputy chief of staff for Personnel, managing the full-time workforce and personnel actions of the Utah Guard. In 2007, MG Burton was assigned as assistant adjutant general-Army and commander of the Utah Army National Guard, where he was serving when appointed to his current position.
MG Burton attended Brigham Young University’s Reserve Officer Training Corps, where he commissioned in 1984 as the distinguished military graduate. In 1986, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the State University of New York. He has since earned two master’s degrees: one in Educational Counseling from the University of Phoenix and the other in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College.
MG Burton is a fifth-generation Utahn. He graduated from Payson High in 1977, where he was active in sports. He and his wife are the parents of three children. When he is not working, he enjoys spending his free time with family.
Arthur Brooks is a bestselling author, a social scientist, and the president of the American Enterprise Institute. Arthur works with top scholars, policymakers, and elected officials to fight for all Americans’ access to free enterprise and earned success.
Arthur’s path to Washington, D.C., has been anything but typical. At 19, he left college to play the French horn professionally. He toured internationally and recorded several albums, eventually landing in the City Orchestra of Barcelona.
In his late 20s, Arthur returned to the U.S. and completed his bachelor’s degree by correspondence. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in public policy, focusing on microeconomics and mathematical modeling. After completing his doctorate, he spent 10 years as a professor of public administration.
Arthur is an in-demand speaker, a New York Times opinion writer, and a frequent radio and TV commentator. A Seattle native, he has been married for 26 years to his wife, Ester. They live in Maryland and have three children.

Loren Allred is a world-renowned vocalist, widely known as the heart-gripping voice behind the song “Never Enough” from the hit soundtrack of The Greatest Showman. The single has been certified Gold, boasts over 100 million digital streams across the globe, and sat atop the Spotify viral charts in the U.S and globally. Allred was recently featured on the Hardwell track “This Is Love,” and looks forward to sharing her recently-announced duet with Michael Bublé, set for worldwide release on November 16, 2018.
