The Sutherland Institute’s philosophy is simple: We believe that parents are responsible for their childrens' education and that the state role in education is primarily as a support to parents. We also believe that educational freedom is a necessary ingredient in providing the best education possible for each individual student.

SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST OPEN TO ALL UTAH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Now is the time for Utah high school students to apply for one of five $1,000 scholarships by participating in the Transparency Scholarship Essay contest.  Entries must be postmarked no later than October 31, 2009.  High school students (grades 9 - 12) may enter the contest by submitting an essay on how to use information available on the new state website, www.transparent.utah.gov, to improve Utah's schools.

Students are encouraged to describe their experience using the website and how they believe the information on that website can lead to improving education.  Students are also encouraged to include facts found on transparent.utah.gov and how those facts have impacted or are currently impacting their education.

In an effort to encourage Utahns to use the new website and to promote responsible citizenship, Sutherland Institute will award five scholarships to the authors of the best essays.
