‘Feminism has betrayed an entire generation of women’

In 2008, the daughter of novelist Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple, wrote about how her mother’s extreme feminism poisoned her life. Rebecca Walker rued her upbringing and praised the happiness that motherhood has now brought her. Her article caused a bit of an uproar at the time.

My mother’s feminist principles coloured every aspect of my life. As a little girl, I wasn’t even allowed to play with dolls or stuffed toys in case they brought out a maternal instinct. It was drummed into me that being a mother, raising children and running a home were a form of slavery. Having a career, travelling the world and being independent were what really mattered according to her. …

Feminism has betrayed an entire generation of women into childlessness. It is devastating.

Five years later, mother and daughter are still estranged, and the original piece by Rebecca Walker is worth reading again.

All of the women I am close to know that they are building and improving life on this planet and most are spiritual and or religious . A specific race or religion does not seem to be a factor. Family, self esteem and actualization appear to be important factors with many. Some are financially wealthy and some are not. Money does not even seem to be a motivating factor. Now these are the women I have chosen to spend my life with.

I have actually met ,listened to and tried to understand women who claim to be feminists.
I have found many to be ungrounded, and educated ,but not knowledgeable. I have met them in classrooms, work and socially. They believe in “change” but are unclear what the change should be that would actually improve their lives. They want much but hardly ever speak of giving. They work hard to improve their bodies and minds ,but do not respect them . They confuse equal with having the same as a male. Anger appears to be the mood of preference for feminists, and disdain for all who do not believe as they do.
I have indeed learned from these women. I have learned what I DO NOT want to be, I do not want to be a self hater, apologizing for who and what I am.
On the other hand from my children I have learned how fortunate I am to have the ability to give and nurture life in addition to sharing the wonders of it all with a husband, family and friends. A man who allows me to be the best I can be at all of my endeavors, motherhood, home and career.
I do not always love all of the challenges life brings each day, and some days I fail at one or more, but I always love being me. A woman, wife, mother ,citizen of the world who was also blessed by being born in the USA. How many more gifts does one need?
I do however respect the right of feminists to be feminists as long as they do not interfere with my beliefs and goals ,but please forgive me if I do not enjoy your company, or understand your anger anymore than you understand my love of family.
