"The oft repeated phrase that "throwing money at the problem" doesn't
work is just a theory in Utah because it has never been tried."

The sentence above is a crock. Education funding in inflation-adjusted dollars was doubled over a twenty-year period. There was no significant improvement in results.

Furthermore, we don't have to repeat the failed experiments of places like DC or Kansas City just to be able to say "it has been tried." Only idiots insist on learning by making all the mistakes again. Part of wisdom is learning from the mistakes of others.

There will never be enough money to satisfy the education bureaucracy. Bureaucracies by their very nature are insatiable. You can't show me any government bureaucracy that reduced itself or even stayed the same without outside constraint.

Smaller class sizes allowing more individual attention to students who are struggling costs money both in staffing and facilities. Studies have shown that this has a positive outcome on student achievement. Espousing that families "fill their quivers with children" and then grousing about how much it costs to educate all of those children is hypocritical nonsense. Public polls show that the majority of Utahn's are willing to pay more in taxes to improve education. The oft repeated phrase that "throwing money at the problem" doesn't work is just a theory in Utah because it has never been tried. With friends like the Sutherland Institute and the far right Republicans from Utah County, public education doesn't need enemies. Vouchers were soundly defeated Paul, get over it.

Earlier this year the Sutherland Institute did a story on myself and my daughters on our struggles with the schools. SI is right on track with this. The schools were originally incensed that I would demand and insist that I knew what was best for my kids and not them. Parents should be and are the first line of defense in their kids education. Not the last.
