I'm afraid I don't understand...how exactly does government control of marriage to only give legal sanction to marriage between a man and a woman give me more liberty than if there were no government involvement in the marriage contract? If there were no government involvement in marriage at all, wouldn't I have absolute liberty? If there is any government involvement whatsoever does this not mean I have a lesser measure of liberty since there is some rule or regulation I must satisfy in order to avoid some form of aggression?

I can see that perhaps laws protecting the traditional definition of marriage provide greater freedom for those who agree with that definition, but is this a moral position to take in our society where right and wrong are determined by the arbitrary dictates of man, as opposed to any divine source? Is not one group forcing their view upon another? If it were God commanding it to be so, that would be one thing, but do we believe our politicians to be speaking the word of God and doing His will in all things?

And when we support a system of government that has control over what is and what isn't marriage, are we not supporting a double-edged sword that benefits us as long as we are in control of it, but which will do damage to us when it falls into the hands of those who wish us harm? Would it not be more moral and wiser to not use force except in cases of physical aggression and rather rely upon persuasion, thus guaranteeing the liberty of all parties, whether on one side or the other?
