Having been in education for 3 decades, I have some perspective: When I signed my contract it was presented as a given that I would also sign up for the union, which I was duped into doing. After 3 years and having reached some level of safety in my job I dropped the union. In Utah most teachers disagree with the political spending of their union dues, it the late 80's there was an attempt to break the state away from the NEA, but it didn't work. Then there was the rise of the Federation of Teachers which caught on in some districts but generally fizzled after a decade. Most teachers use the union as a protection against their principals, some of whom can be vindictive cusses.
