Just skimmed the article, but have to add my cynical comment, or two. I feel that the present situation is what we as a people want, as decided by at least ten or fifteen congresses, i.e., total inaction on the present seething mess. We have cheap labor, a group of people who are easily identifiable yet PC invisible who can be easily exploited. They are preyed upon criminally, politically and economically by both cultures, Anglo and Spanish Language based societies. They can be exploited for political cash as Pols can pander on all sides of the issue and do nothing of substance with little fear of reprisal, as they cannot vote.

They are mostly economic refugees from corrupt, inept, socialistic governments and societies who in reality don't care about becoming American citizens. Their culture does not value education (our culture is also devaluing true or real education as well but I digress). As illegals they tend to form ghettos and do not intermix and assimilate into the English speaking and Northern European based culture. The whine and brie crowd on the East side of SLC spout the value of diversity and melting pot yet East of Seventh East there is very little of it, while West of the Freeway there is a lot and the resulting intercultural mess that is not so much of a patchwork quilt of harmony but more of silent distrust, some fear of gang activity with the graffiti, unwed mothers, home boy dress and neighbors divided by language and culture.

I will address the school issue: Budgets are strained and to have to add classes in Spanish, "immersion" is big buzz word, and drag along poorly prepared, less than grade level readers that are socially promoted further strains the budgets. True, the parents pay taxes which support education, but to be real about the problem, I suspect it takes a life time of tax paying to even out the amount drained out of the coffers for a 12-year education in the public schools. These people, illegal immigrants, have cut in line, and expect a happy host who will add to the soup pot for more mouths to feed, all the time not even acknowledging that they are uninvited and unable and unwilling to assimilate into the population.

A possible solution you cry? Perhaps this my be a point to begin. All illegals register within a brief period of time and in the process plead guilty to illegal entry. A pleas in abeyance is held and the identified alien is given an identity card that permits continued stay and work under a valid SSN. (I am not in favor of stealing from illegal labor's participation in the Social Security ponzi scheme - perhaps this could force congress to tackle that greased pig too). The stay is time limited and renewable under conditions such as proficiency in English, clean record. Citizenship? Forget about it! This also indentifies children as foreign nationals, and should they apply for citizenship they must formally and forever renounce their citizenship in the country of either their or their parent's birth.

Obvious criminal elements are deported. Emotionally I wouldn't mind a shoot on sight for re-entry but that would probably not fly.

Oh, for those who want compassion, I understand that sponsorship of a alien or a family is possible. Surely those who have time for BMW's etc. could spring for the change to sponsor a needy illegal family. They could be generous with their own money, and not the public coffers.
