3.HERITAGE FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS SUTHERLAND’S WORK
The Heritage Foundation, the widely-respected national think tank in Washington, D.C., recently highlighted Sutherland Institute’s Self-Reliance Index (SRI).
Sutherland published the SRI in Helping Utahns Help Themselves: A Self-Reliance Index, authored by Policy Analyst Matthew C. Piccolo, on July 22, 2010. The SRI is a tool that individuals, families, assistance agencies, and case workers can use to assess how self-reliant – and thereby how dependent – a family or individual is on others for survival, and to offer suggestions on how to become more self-reliant.
On July 26, 2010, Heritage published an article titled Self-Reliance: Better Than Government Dependence wherein it commends Sutherland’s efforts:
“With dependency on government at an all time high in America, the Sutherland Institute’s Self-Reliance Index is being introduced at a crucial time. The Self-Reliance Index should change the way Americans look at the issue of poverty, because a self-reliant person isn’t poor, but one dependent on the government is.”
