Lobbying Efforts

Sutherland Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. As such, Sutherland Institute is legally permitted to “lobby” under IRS regulations. Sutherland Institute lobbies under an “H election” and is required to report its lobbying efforts in its annual IRS 990 form.

Several members of Sutherland’s staff are registered lobbyists in the state of Utah. Sutherland also may contract with outside, paid, contract lobbyists to assist its work. Any staff member lobbying for Sutherland only does so in behalf of the Institute.

Lobbying in behalf of Sutherland’s objectives includes any activity wherein a member of the Sutherland staff communicates with an elected official or “grassroots” population to vote yes or no on a specific piece of legislation or initiative.
