1.LDS GENERAL AUTHORITY PRESENTS SIGNAL ADDRESS ON SAME SEX ATTRACTION
The September 22, 2009 issue of the Sacred Ground Initiative Update (SGI Update), a weekly email publication of Sutherland Institute, highlighted a recent significant address by Elder Bruce C. Hafen of the First Quorum of the Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The presentation was given on September 19, 2009 at the annual conference of Evergreen International, an organization focused on helping individuals diminish and overcome same-sex attraction and behavior.
Elder Hafen is the former provost of Brigham Young University (chief academic officer) and dean of BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School. His professional areas of expertise include constitutional law and family law. In his discourse, Elder Hafen identified and refuted four misconceptions that activists try to establish as facts in their effort to influence policymakers and the public: 1) That same-gender attraction is an inborn and unalterable orientation; 2) That therapy cannot treat, let alone change, same-gender attraction; 3) That most Americans favor same-gender marriage, and the LDS church is outside the mainstream in opposing it; and 4) That there are no rational, non-religious reasons for opposing same-gender marriage.
