1.Gay Marriage Referendum Overturned in California
The California Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage today in a 4-3 ruling. The decision overrules a referendum passed in 2000 by the voters of the state.
“By redefining marriage to mean any two people in an official legal relationship, the California Supreme Court has dramatically undercut the institution of marriage,” said Bill Duncan, director of Sutherland Institute’s Center for Family and Society. “This decision effectively labels the vast majority of people around the world as bigots.”
A constitutional amendment to redefine marriage in California as being between a man and a woman will be on the ballot in November. This referendum will allow the voters to address the decision of the court.

The Best of State organization has named the Sutherland Institute as Utah’s top Education/Advocacy organization for its innovative program, the Transcend Series. This is the third year in a row the Series has won top honors in this category.
“We are grateful to be recognized again for our work with Transcend,” said Stan Rasmussen, Sutherland’s manager of public affairs and director of the Series. “It is our hope that this kind of recognition will encourage more elected officials and community leaders to participate in the outstanding programs of the Institute.”
