Derek Monson graduated from Brigham Young University in August 2007 with bachelor’s degrees in economics and political science, and began working for Sutherland Institute as a policy analyst in May 2007. Derek has co-authored a research study on Utah government spending in the journal Public Budgeting and Finance and was cited as a contributor in the book The Pre-K Debates – Current Controversies and Issues.
During his years at Sutherland, he has been a key player in policy victories in government transparency and spending; education governance and digital learning; alcohol control policy; immigration reform; religious liberty protections; and Medicaid reform. He is a consistent presence in Utah news media on public policy issues and has published dozens of opinion pieces in the Salt Lake Tribune, Deseret News, and other local newspapers. He is married to Melanie, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree from BYU in 2008, and has one daughter (so far).
